Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post. The NCLEX RN Mastery app was purchased with our own money. We are not affiliated with NCLEX RN Mastery in any way.
The NCLEX RN Mastery App is a great tool to use to prepare you for the NCLEX! It features a total of 1,634 questions (wow!) and is priced at only $29.99, so it is definitely a steal. But this app features so much more than its extensive question bank. It is also packed with mnemonics, terminology, three study plans you can choose from, topic-specific quizzes, test-taking tips and more. Read along to find out how Kendra and I incorporated NCLEX RN Mastery into our study routine and to determine if this app would suit your own study needs.
The app is extremely user-friendly and when it comes to completing practice questions, you have a lot of options with this app! You can choose to answer questions from a certain category and further narrow the type of questions you receive by sub-category. For example, let’s say that you want to focus on Maternity (the category) questions. So you can select “Maternity”, and you can either choose “All Maternity” (which will allow you to receive questions from every Maternity sub-category) or you can narrow your focus by selection “Prenatal”, “Labor, Delivery & Postpartum”, or “Newborn” (all of these are sub-categories).
This is a great feature of the app because it enables you to really target your studying, which is a great idea after you’ve identified your weakest areas (the app can actually help you with this)! I recommend using the “Quick-Start” option (which allows you to receive questions from every category in a randomized fashion) the majority of the time that you use the app because when you take the NCLEX, your questions will be presented this way.
Monitoring Your Progress
As I alluded to above, NCLEX RN Mastery allows you to see the areas that you are weakest in, and it actually does this in two ways. First, from the home menu you can select “My Progress” which shows you the percentage of questions you have answered correctly overall, as well as your percentage correct from each category. The app will indicate which topic you are weakest and strongest in after you have taken enough questions for it to make sense of your data.
The second way that you can identify your best and worst areas comes from the coolest feature of the app, which is the ability to select know, somewhat know, or don’t know after each question that you answer. These are cleverly color-coded (know=green, somewhat know=yellow, don’t know=red) so that you can literally see how well you are performing in each category.
An important factor to consider when it comes to selecting an NCLEX prep program is the caliber of the questions. You don’t want the questions to be easy-peasy because the NCLEX is certainly not. There’s a big difference between a question seeming “easy” because you are well prepared and a question being “easy” because it is simply knowledge based. One of the first things that you heard when you started nursing school was how important it is to think critically, and that’s because NCLEX-style questions are generally application style questions. You will have to apply the knowledge you’ve learned and use that to guide your implementations in specific scenarios.
NCLEX RN Mastery App questions were not quite as hard as the Kaplan Q-bank (click here to read our review of the Kaplan Q-bank), but they are very high quality questions. There are a few questions that are knowledge-based, but there are far more that are application style. I’m certain that these questions will get you thinking! Another cool feature of the app is that after you answer a question, you are given a pretty extensive rationale. I found it hard to have a meaningful study session if I did not understand why I was getting a question right or wrong. Fortunately, NCLEX RN Mastery has very thorough rationales that are easy to understand, so you’ll know exactly why you got a question right or wrong.
How We Used NCLEX RN Mastery
Kendra and I used the app primarily for the questions because our NCLEX prep strategy was to complete as many practice questions as possible rather than content review, so it would be unfair of me to talk about the terminology review or the mnemonics and some of the other features. But we did look over the “Exam strategies” before we took the NCLEX, and I highly recommend reading through those before you take your exam. I also read through “Lessons From People Who Passed” to get a feel for how other people used the app to study. We incorporated the app into our study routine by answering at least 25 questions each day. The majority of the time, we used the “Quick-Start” feature to randomize our questions, but occasionally we targeted our studying by using the “Quizzes” feature. The quizzes cover a specific category and range from 10-39 questions.
When we used NCLEX RN Mastery, it was only available as a mobile app. You can now download it onto your computer as well. Kendra and I enjoyed having it on our phones because that meant we could study any and everywhere, which we did! Think of how easy it will be to get your question count up while you’re waiting to check out at the grocery store, while your car is being serviced, etc.!
Action Tip: Because of how great this app is, this would be great to buy at the beginning of your nursing school journey and use it throughout school as a study aide. Just think of how prepared you would be not only for NCLEX, but your courses too!
NCLEX RN Mastery is an app that is tremendously valuable! Priced at only $29.99, this app is truly a steal. Especially if you are unable to afford some of the well-known NCLEX prep tools/courses, this app would serve you just as well. You can check it out for yourself by clicking here.
